What to wear to your headshot photo shoot

First off, make sure that you bring more clothing then you think you.  For a successful headshot, it’s much better to have too many, rather than not enough choices .  Bring your clothing pressed and wrinkle-free. Variety is the key!!!

The more choices you have at the shoot, the better.  I’d recommend that you bring around ten to fifteen different outfits.  Keep in mind that some headshots are cropped so that a person’s “lower half” is visible, so make sure you bring something besides just tops.  (bring shoes too)

Solid colors are good.  Loud prints and logos are a headshot no-no.

Black is okay, but don’t bring just black. The agencies really don't like it all that much. You may think it makes you look thin, but it's boring... :o)

To tell you the truth, I don’t really like white clothing because it tends to “blow out” when reproduced.  Sometimes white works, and sometimes it doesn’t.  Some white is okay, but please keep it to a minimum.

The people hiring you will want to know what you look like, so well-fitting clothing is usually better than fashionably loose apparel.

One other thing to consider… Long sleeve tends to work out better for headshots, than short sleeved.  I think the reason is that the skin of the arm tends to compete with the flesh tone of the face causing a distraction.  Yes, I’ve seen really nice headshots with short sleeved, white, logo tops, but most times, it doesn’t work out…
